This is a hard one for me especially after finding out that I am pregnant as it is hard to not think about the future especially for the child you are pregnant with. One cannot help but think about the future of their child and bringing one into this chaotic world.

Despite thinking about the future of my child as well as mine, I thought a great deal about my future and how much hope I have even through my struggles. For me I can’t help but think about the future and where my recovery journey will take me. Yes, I fear bigger relapses with my mental health challenges but hope is there that I will just get back up on horse and continue to work on my recovery.

On that note, I also think a lot about the past. Sometimes not willingly due to PTSD. PTSD sucks and has you thinking about some of the most horrific moments you experienced in your life. For instance PTSD has remember this stuff through flashbacks, nightmares, body memories, intrusive and much much more. There is no stopping remembering this stuff and it sucks big time.

This should be an easy one but it is not as it hurts when I think that a high percentage of all the times I have had a positive example of love have happened when I have been an adult. I am not saying that I don’t have positive examples of how I felt loved, it’s just that I have more as an adult due to the trauma I experienced as a child.

If I had to choose a positive example of when I felt love is when a friend of mine who is the manager at PAWS Cat City where I volunteer at gave me a heart shaped stone as a reminder that I am loved when I am struggling. She had given it to me after she was able to grab a few at the end of a funeral service she attended. The person who passed away had a major influence on a lot of people’s lives including mine despite never meeting this person. Anyway, the pink heart shaped stone is a reminder of how loved I am and not just by the PAWS Cat City manager but by other friends as well as some family.

What is the greatest gift someone could give you?

For me the greatest gift someone can give me is their time, love and friendship. Giving your time to listen to me or to spend with me is the greatest gift a friend or loved one can give me. It shows me that they care about me and love me. I know it seems hokey but it is true.

Describe an item you were incredibly attached to as a youth. What became of it?

The thing I was incredibly attached to as a youth was my teddy bear. It was a gift from one of my uncles the day I was born. I slept with it every night as a kid and even as a teenager. Hell, I slept with this teddy bear as an adult. I still have this teddy bear and I am nearly 45 years old. I stopped sleeping with it about five years ago because my teddy bear is getting extremely old and worn out. So, that means my teddy bear is spending his retirement years on display in my bedroom. My teddy bear is extremely well loved and has been through a great deal with me.

To me a good leader is someone who can be empathetic and compassionate while communicating in a direct way. A good leader also leads by example. Sadly, most leaders don’t lead by example nor do they remember where they come from and how challenging it was to become a leader. Granted some leaders do get their leadership position just handed to them and in my experience these types of leaders tend to do more harm than good. I guess for me having a leader who can lead by example and preach what they practice is the type of leader that is best.

My dream job is being a peer specialist that works in the emergency room of a hospital. I would love to be able to help those at the most challenging time of their life whether it is mental health related or physical health related. Having someone there to help a patient in the emergency room could ultimately help them get the best care possible. I just think emergency rooms could benefit from having a peer specialist in them.

I think the most memorable road trip I had was the summer between seventh and eighth grades with my grandparent. To give you some back story the last week of school during seventh grade Betty White was on my junior high for two days to interact with students and I met her. The road trip from Southern California to Northern California with my grandparents happened the week after school got out.

On the way to the final destination my grandparents and I saw many celebrities which isn’t unusual nor was it the first time seeing celebrities due to the fact I have seen many at school assemblies or the many times I went to Disneyland. Some celebrities just wanted to be left alone while others appeared to enjoy interacting with fans.

I share this because once my grandparents and I got to our final destination we checked into our not all that fancy hotel when low and behold Betty White was checking in front of us. It turns out that we had the room right next to Betty White. Anyway, the third night we were at this particular hotel we heard a knock at the door. I answered and it was Betty White who asked to speak to my grandparents. Betty White informed my grandparents how “polite” I was to her when she was at my school for a couple of days as well as “polite” I was to her with the couple of interactions at the hotel pool. Betty White took my grandparents out for dinner and then took me to a movie so my grandparents could “have a few hours without a teenager.” I had a blast and have been so impressed with Betty White as she is the most down to earth celebrity that I ever met and I am sad that she is no longer on this earth.

What do you enjoy doing most in your leisure time?

I really enjoy doing a lot of things in my leisure time but if I have to choose it would be a tie between reading books and reading as well as collecting comic books. Specifically, I collect Wonder Woman comic books. I really enjoy the community of those who collect comic books as we are a unique set of people. The type of books I like to read are fantasy books but I also enjoy science fiction. It appears that folks who enjoy reading fantasy and science fiction books also like comic books which is why I think I enjoy the comic book community.

Five things I like to do for fun and why.

  1. Reading – Reading helps me get out of my head as well as gives something to do when the real world gets too hard to cope with.
  2.  Watch Movies – Same reason as reading. It is also something I can do with friends and family as well as socialize.
  3. Art – I love to do art work especially coloring. It is pretty much an escape from reality like movies and reading are for me.
  4. Play on a Dodgeball Team – I love playing on a dodgeball team and playing against others. The team I am on may not be the best but I love it.
  5. Spending Time with Friends – Who doesn’t enjoy spending time with their friends? I know I do.
